Eight kinds of story
Pick one when you start a book and it changes how chapters are written and how the cover is drawn.
A genre is not a label on a shelf here. It changes the writing: what a chapter is trying to do, and how it ends.
All eight
- Adventure
- Journeys, maps and a reason to keep going.
- Fantasy
- Magic with rules, and somewhere else to be.
- Mystery
- Clues to gather and something that does not add up.
- Space and science
- Ships, planets and inventions that nearly work.
- Fairy tale
- Old bones, told again.
- Animals
- Creatures with names and opinions.
- Funny
- Silliness, escalating.
- Spooky
- A shiver, and the lights back on by the end.
About the spooky one
It is written to be atmospheric rather than frightening: a shiver that turns out to have an explanation, and everybody safe by the last line. That is a rule the writing is given, not a hope.
Or none at all
"No particular kind" is the first option and the default. A family who has not decided what sort of story this is should not have to decide before they can start one.
