It uses the voice already in the browser
Nothing is downloaded, nothing is generated and nothing is sent anywhere. The chapter on the screen is read by the speech your device already has, which is why it starts instantly and why it works with no connection once the page has loaded.
It reads a paragraph at a time rather than the whole chapter in one go, which is what keeps it from being cut off partway through on some browsers.
Four speeds
Three quarter speed for a three year old following along, up to one and a half for a nine year old who has already guessed the ending. Change it mid chapter and the paragraph starts again at the new speed.
It works on a shared link too
A grandparent reading a story you sent them gets the same button, with no account and nothing to install. If the text is small on their tablet, they can listen instead.
